Does your loved one snore but denies the fact that he or she does? Are you woken up on occasion by the sound of what you believe to be a vacuum cleaning your carpet but realize that it is your bed partner? And months down the line, after many sleepless nights, the sound has evolved into more like a rocket ship taking off for the moon? You are at your wit’s end because your loved one refuses to believe he or she snores. Need evidence and want to catch your loved one in the act? Get a new snoring app.
Sleep Apnea Treatment Centers of America™ (SATCOA) launched SnoreOMeter, a free app to assist in providing proof that snoring is a reality for your family member. Snoring is a classic sign that a person might have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which left untreated can increase the sufferer’s risk for life-threatening conditions such as cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, stroke and type 2 diabetes. OSA is defined as pauses in breathing that can be just a few seconds to minutes, and occur as little as 5 to greater than 30 times per hour.
“Currently it is estimated that 80% of people with sleep apnea are undiagnosed and hence untreated,” said Jeffrey L. Silveira, MD, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of SATCOA. “Many of them are in denial and we decided to create a fun app to provide significant others/spouses with the ammunition they need to assist sufferers in seeking treatment.”

The SnoreOMeter app is available as a free download on SATCOA’s website and is available through iTunes and GooglePlay. The app functions to record someone snoring, which can then be uploaded to social media and rated. Upon recording, the snore is evaluated for decibel level and time between snores, with a visual characterization of the sound with a comparison to a blow dryer, vacuum cleaner, jackhammer, jet or a rocket ship.
“We partnered with a local company based out of Tampa, FL to design and create the application,” said David M. Williams, Vice President of Business Development of SATCOA. ”The SnoreOMeter provides sleepless spouses with the proper tools to prove that their spouse is snoring, and educate them about the risk of not getting help.”
Each week by noon (EST) on Friday the person with the most likes on Facebook for his or her ‘snore recording’ will win a free prize. In addition, recorded snores can be submitted to sleep apnea specialists at SATCOA for consultation to determine whether or not he or she might be a candidate for medical treatment.
