What Are the Keys to Restorative Sleep?

Think about the difference in your day when you get a good night of sleep versus a night where you spend every hour tossing and turning. When you are well-rested you are a wonderful human being to be around and when not, well…you are lucky your family, friends and colleagues like you so much. It is not surprising that there are quite a number of benefits of restorative sleep.

Research shows that when we do not have consistent and restorative sleep, our personality suffers. In the short-term, lack of quality sleep causes anxiety, depression, moodiness, irritability and poor memory. If sleep deprivation evolves into a chronic condition, a host of other health problems can emerge such as heart problems, obesity and severe depression.

Keys to Restorative Sleep

There quite a number of tips that are easy to implement and can assist in getting you a night of restorative sleep.

Set Bedtime and Wake-up Time

As a child you probably had a set bedtime. You went to sleep at the same time every night and woke up at the same time in the morning to get to school. And the same practice can help you in your efforts in getting a good night of sleep as an adult. But remember to shoot for the same times to go to bed and wake up even on the weekend, otherwise you can fall back into a rut where you are not achieving restorative sleep.

Establish a Bedtime Ritual

So you set your bedtime, but being able to drift off into slumber at the same time each night might prove difficult. Therefore, try establishing a nightly bedtime ritual. Take a bubble bath, aromatherapy shower or play meditative or spa-like music to help you relax and separate yourself from an otherwise hectic day.

Cool, Dark and Quiet Bedroom

Key to getting restorative sleep is making sure your bedroom is cool, dark and quite. Invest in dark curtains, put on a sleep mask or wear ear plugs. In addition, the bedroom should be free of any interruptions, especially of the technological kind, such as computers, TVs, cell phones and tablets.
