Radiofrequency Ablation of the Tongue Only
Prior to the first treatment, we require all patients to present a current sleep study to determine treatment outcomes. Prior to consultation, all provided sleep studies are read by one of our board-certified sleep medicine physicians. If the patients sleep study is positive for sleep apnea they are scheduled for a consultation to assess candidacy for our procedure. During the consultation the physician performs a flexible laryngoscopy to determine the source of obstruction. Only after a positive obstruction of the tongue is the patient cleared to move forward with the procedure.
Six weeks after the last treatment the patient is prescribed a sleep study in order to test the effectiveness. Our measure of surgical success is when a patient is cured and no longer needs a CPAP device. This occurs when the patient’s post procedural sleep study shows and RDI <5 and an oxygen saturation above 90%.
Concurrent RFA-CPAP Treatment
We believe in a philosophy of concurrent RFA-CPAP treatment in order to obtain the most effective results to introduce not just a successful treatment for sleep apnea, but a cure. Every one of our patients is started on an auto PAP or CPAP prior to the first treatment being performed. This allows us to address and treat the patient’s sleep apnea while the volumetric reduction occurs over the next 6 – 8 months.
The idea behind the comprehensive treatment platform is that in the worst case scenario, we should be able to take a non-diagnosed or non-compliant/ intolerant OSA CPAP Patient and effectively treat and potentially cure their OSA.
Compiling data for Surgical Outcome Study
Every patient that completes the course of treatment at one of our SATCOA locations is required to receive a post sleep study. Once completed the results are graded by one of our board-certified sleep physicians and added to our database for inclusion in our next large scale study. Currently we have nine locations generating hundreds of performed procedures per month, and we are preparing to publish the results by the end of next year when we will have thousands of completed treatments in a controlled environment.
Read what one of our patients had to say about Sleep Apnea Treatment Centers of America
Sleep apnea was waking me up in the middle of the night gasping for air. I decided to have the procedure done and as a result, I no longer wake up in the middle of the night and I sleep very well. I don’t feel tired during the day anymore like I did before the procedure. It was a truly relief in my life… I hold my physician in the highest regard. – Vickie L.
