Sleep Apnea Treatment Centers of America (SATCOA) & Florida Department of Highway Safety & Motor Vehicles Partner for Drowsy Driving Week
Event Scheduled to Educate Public about Prevention with Vehicle Demonstration in Downtown Tampa
Tampa, FL (November 1, 2013) – Sleep Apnea Treatment Centers of America (SATCOA) is partnering with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FDHSMV) to educate the community about drowsy driving and its prevention. This year’s national health observance of Drowsy Driving Week is November 3-10, 2013. SATCOA and FDHSMV joined forces to host an event in downtown Tampa on November 7 to raise awareness of this occurrence often attributed to obstructive sleep apnea.
“When a driver suffers from excessive daytime sleepiness—a common symptom of sleep apnea, he or she is 15 times more likely to be involved in a deadly motor vehicle accident,” stated Jeffrey L. Silveria, MD, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of SATCOA.
According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, each year drowsy driving crashes result in at least 1,500 deaths and 71,000 injuries. Similar to drunk and drugged driving, sleep loss or fatigue slows reaction time, makes drivers less attentive and impairs decision-making skills.
“A drowsy driver can be as dangerous on the road as a drunk driver,” said FDHSMV Director Julie L. Jones. “Before getting behind the wheel of a vehicle, be sure you are well rested or have another licensed driver with you who can take over if you become too tired to drive safely.”
The following are the details about the event:
When: November 7, 2013 at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Corner of 201 East Kennedy Boulevard and Franklin Street, Tampa, FL
What: Presentation from Florida Highway Patrol Steve Gaskins and Jeffrey L. Silveria, MD, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of SATCOA along with a demonstration of the Crash Rollover Simulator
In addition to the outdoor community education event, SATCOA will hold its official ribbon cutting ceremony to launch the grand opening of its Tampa location immediately following the educational demonstration.
